1. Scope
1.1 This test method uses the Wenner four-electrode method to measure the surface electrical resistivity of hardened concrete cylinders. 1.2 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory information. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables) shall not be considered as requirements of this standard.
Electrical resistivity provides an indication of the state of a concrete because it is related to the curing and the degree of hydration. It can also be a very useful measure of consistency and quality among concrete batches once it has been standardized against a test mixture. The electrical conductivity is also proportional to the ionic diffusivity of the concrete. The surface resistivity is a rapid and portable test method that can be used in the laboratory or in the field monitor the performance of a structure and can be part of a monitoring program, such as those used by state departments of transportation.
