    1. Scope

    1.1 The purpose of this practice is to screen bacteria for their potential to develop resistance to antimicrobial compounds (any compound for which an minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) has been established) when exposed to increasing concentrations of the material over time. This practice describes broth microdilution methodology that can be applied to antimicrobial compounds that are soluble in solvent systems that are not significantly hostile to the target organism(s) of interest. 1.2 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

    Bacteria are known to develop resistance to some antimicrobial compounds over time. This practice will provide a consistent means of assessing the potential for new compounds to induce resistance.
