1.1 This guide presents principles and recommended practices in designing and conducting sensory-instrumental studies to ensure meaningful correlations. This guide also includes a summary of the best statistical procedures used in correlation studies. 1.2 These procedures are applicable to many situations for which sensory and instrumental evaluations are relevant, including food, personal and household care, and other consumer products. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
There seems to be a gap in knowledge about instrument-sensory correlations between the academic community and those involved in commercial/industrial quality control practices. We expect this document to be useful to those in product development and quality control for a variety of consumer products.
