    1. Scope

    1.1 This guide provides guidance for designing sustainable low-sloped roofing systems, including membranes covered with vegetative systems or ballasted insulation (inverted roofing membrane assemblies). A sustainable roofing system should embody three sustainable principles: minimize environmental impact, conserve energy, and extend roof lifespan. These principles are abstract and do not readily translate into prescriptive requirements. 1.2 The user is reminded that the primary purpose of a roof system is to weatherproof the buildings top surface. The user of this guide recognizes that implementing a sustainable roofing system is the intent of this guide. 1.3 This guide covers roofing systems, coverings, and materials under jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

    The guide is intended to provide a framework and process to be used in the design of sustainable roofing systems.
