1. Scope
1.1 This Standard describes the environmental requirements that medical equipment must meet in order to declare their suitability for use in mass casualty events. 1.2 This Standard does not purport to address every possible environmental condition that can be encountered in a mass casualty event. 1.3 It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to determine whether or not to impose additional requirements beyond those identified in this Standard to meet their particular need.
Currently there exists no particular standard for medical equipment that will be used in a mass casualty event. General standards exist that define environmental ranges for medical equipment used in hospitals and transport settings but no standard exists that takes into account the need to provide care at ground zero under adverse conditions. This standard will be used by Federal, State, County and local agencies involved in mass casualty event planning, and by military, public and private users and organizations.
