About the Course

An emphasis is placed on the current NDE state-of-the-art inspection methods for metal AM parts used in fracture critical aerospace applications. For completeness, high performance plastic AM parts are also addressed. The unique NDE challenges posed by AM parts compared to conventionally manufactured wrought and cast metal parts are covered. Current initiatives being pursued by government, industry, and national voluntary consensus organizations to identify high priority tasks and national standards needed to qualify and certify AM parts using NDE are also covered.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Recall the defect types encountered in additive manufactured parts and how defect type and size can be affected by material, processing, and post-processing.

  • Select the best NDE method by understanding part geometry, part complexity, post-processing, and finishing.

  • Recall state-of-the-art NDE methods, and newer promising NOE methods for characterizing additive manufactured parts.

  • Discuss consensus approaches being used by NASA, the aerospace industry, and elsewhere for qualification and certification of AM parts.

  • Integrate NDE into qualification and certification plans for AM parts.
