Abstract
This specification covers the testing and physical requirements of two types of coal-tar pitch suitable for use in the construction of built-up roofing, dampproofing, and membrane waterproofing systems. The coal-tar pitch shall be prepared from selected crudes using suitable refining processes, and shall be homogeneous and free of water. Materials shall be sampled, tested, and conform to properties such as water content, specific gravity, ring-and-ball softening point, Cleveland open cup flash point, solubility in carbon disulfide, ash content, and distillation (total distillates and residue).

1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers two types of coal-tar pitch suitable for use in the construction of built-up roofing, dampproofing, and membrane waterproofing systems.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
