Significance and Use
This test method determines the amount of water absorbed by a backing material. Water absorption by the backing may affect sealant performance.
This test method is also useful when designating proper storage of back up material and in determining appropriate precautions when using backing materials.
The specifier, using this test method, can exercise judgment in the selection of backing materials based on water absorption characteristics.
1. Scope
1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure for determining the water absorption characteristics of sealant backing and joint filler materials, hereinafter referred to as backing.
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The inch-pound units in parentheses are for information only.
1.3 The committee with jurisdiction over this standard is not aware of any comparable standards published by other ASTM committees or other organizations.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
