This specification covered zinc coatings produced by electro-deposition for light coating weight [mass] applications on steel sheet. This product was available in four zinc-coating designations which were listed in Table 1.
Formerly under the jurisdiction of Committee A05 on Metallic Coated Iron, this specification was withdrawn in April 2005 and replaced by Specification A 879/A 879M for Steel Sheet, Zinc Coated by the Electrolytic Process for Applications Requiring Designation of the Coating Mass on Each Surface.

1.1 This specification covers steel sheet in coils and cut lengths that are zinc-coated by electro-deposition.
1.2 The electrolytic zinc-coated sheet covered by this specification is produced with a light (thin) coating mass. The coating designations and coating masses are listed in Table 1.
1.3 This product is intended for the manufacture of formed or miscellaneous parts; the zinc coating is used to provide some enhancement in corrosion performance as compared to an uncoated sheet. It is not intended to withstand outdoor exposure without chemical treating and painting.
1.4 The electrolytic zinc-coated sheet covered by this specification is produced as commercial quality (CQ), drawing quality (DQ), drawing quality special killed (DQSK), structural (physical) quality (SQ), and high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA).
1.5 The product is available in three zinc-coating classes, as listed in Table 1.
1.6 For purposes of determining conformance with this specification, values shall be rounded to the nearest unit in the right-hand place of figures used in expressing the limiting values in accordance with the rounding method of Practice E29.
1.7 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification. See 4.2.2 for proper reference when ordering.
