Symposia / General InformationD22 Air Quality
Event Name: October 2012 Committee Week
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.
ABOUT THE EVENT
The Second ASTM D22 Symposium on Silica and Associated Respirable Mineral Particles will be held on October 25-26, 2012. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality, the symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, GA, in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of the committee.
Crystalline silica is present in most rocks and soils and many construction materials. Chronic and acute respiratory disease associated with occupational exposure to airborne Respirable Crystalline Silica, (RCS) has been observed through history and, currently, there is no effective treatment. Therefore, it is essential to understand working environments where silica dust is present and to take all necessary precautions for workers health. An estimated 1.7 million workers (2002) are exposed in various industries and more than one third of those with silicosis were employed in mining and construction. US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) enforcement data indicate that some workers are exposed to levels of RCS in excess of current (1970's) exposure limits. In 1997, crystalline silica was classified as a "Group One" human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. In 2002, the UK Health & Safety Executive described a risk of 0.5% (1 in 200 workers) of developing silicosis after 15 years of exposure to RCS at 0.04 mg/m3, with the risk increasing to 2.5% at 0.1 mg/m3. A threshold limit value (TLV) for RCS of 0.025 mg/m3 was accepted by American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) in 2006. Other organizations, nationally and internationally, including OSHA and MSHA, are re-evaluating guidance or regulations on RCS.
Air samples are collected on filters through cyclone pre-selectors for the respirable fraction which are limited to sampling around a one cubic-meter air volume for an 8-hour work-shift. Current analytical methods include infrared absorption spectrometry and x-ray powder diffraction. Both analytical methods have been evaluated through the Proficiency Analytical Testing conducted by the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Samples containing at least 0.04 mg of RCS had a relative standard deviation for interlaboratory variability above 20% and a relationship with loading which predicted unacceptable variation at the lower levels which would be collected around the new ACGIH TLV.
Improving and standardizing analytical methodologies across laboratories and developing samplers that provide additional RCS mass for analysis is required to address this situation. Combining these two approaches will allow accurate evaluate of workplace concentrations of RCS and has the potential to allow shorter-term task-based sampling for better understanding of the determinants of exposure. This Symposium builds on the first ASTM Silica Symposium (2004, Salt Lake City) and provides an update on progress towards accurately assessing RCS exposures for compliance with current limit values. It will be valuable to regulators and bodies which set guidance for exposures, managers and technicians of laboratories engaged in analysis, hygienists and others collecting samples risk assessors and managers engaged in determining and managing the risks of products or processes that may result in emissions, and representatives of workers exposed to these products and processes.
The language of the symposium will be English.
Online registration is currently open and will close October 17, 2012. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below.
Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID.
All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the symposium. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at symposium.
A refund of the symposium fee will be honored only if requested at least 7 business days prior to the symposium. To cancel your registration and request a refund, please contact Hannah Sparks at firstname.lastname@example.org or 610-832-9678.
