ABOUT THE EVENT
The Joint ASTM/WEAR Conference on Anthropometry and Fit to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday June 24-25, 2014. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D13.55 on Body Measurement for Apparel Sizing and WEAR (World Engineering Anthropometry Resource), the conference will be held at the Sheraton Toronto in Toronto, ON, Canada, in conjunction with the June standards development meetings of Committee.
There is a critical need for improved apparel sizing and fit methods for health, safety and well-being. Millions of dollars are lost each year due to poor fit, and poor fit can be unsafe for not only protective wear but also for every day apparel items. For example, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulates sizing for children's sleepwear and requires a snug fit for fire protection. Few companies measure garment fit on anyone other than a single individual who is their fit model. As a result, neither the range of fit in a single size, nor the population accommodated in the full size range is measured or known. In other words, companies are missing huge segments of their target markets. Evidence for the pervasiveness of fit problems in the apparel industry can be found by searching the internet for companies who have body scanners or gimmicks such as a virtual model to try clothes for you to help you find your size. They don't work because no one knows what garment fits what body. Fit problems are perhaps more serious and even less well understood for protective apparel such as body armor or firefighters cooling systems. The good news is there are solutions out there. In this conference there will be discussions about:
- the need for a body of knowledge and an accessible database of fit,
- new methods for fitting a target market that can improve fit by at least 50% over a product's current fit with the same number of sizes, and
- how to establish a fit data management ontology that enables sharing and understanding of fit knowledge across agencies, disciplines, and countries.
The conference will provide a forum for the exchange of research and standards development based on anthropometry pertinent to the apparel industry and other industries that need anthropometric information for developing products that fit the human shape.
The recent advances in anthropometric techniques – from 3-D body scans to statistical methods – provide unprecedented information about the shape and variability of the human body. The new techniques and tools developed in the research community can potentially change the way we design and test products and workspaces. However, due to lack of communication, these new technologies have not been effectively adopted in the industry. This joint conference will provide a forum for exchanging ideas and information between the researchers and the end users. It will also be an opportunity to identify knowledge and technological gaps in the application of engineering anthropometry in the industry.

Online registration opens approximately 8 weeks before the conference and closes June 18, 2014. The fees to attend this conference are listed below.
The special fee is for WEAR members only.
A dinner cruise will take place on Tuesday June 24, 2014 for those interested in attending. The cost for the dinner cruise is $85.00 US Dollars. Registration is required to attend this event. You must be registered by May 2, 2014 to attend this event.
A tour of the Defence Research and Development Canada, DRDC, will take place on Thursday June 26, 2014. The bus transportation will leave the hotel at approximately 8:00am and will return around 12:30pm. Please note that there is an additional fee to attend the tours. The tours are limited to 40 attendees on a first come first serve basis. The fee to attend the tours is $35.00 which includes transportation.
Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID. The waived fee includes admission to the technical sessions only.
All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the conference. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at conference.

ASTM Member Fee
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS
Conference attendees interested in receiving 1.05 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the conference, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the conference.

Group rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full, but no later than May 15, 2014. ASTM rates are $185 single/double plus 13% tax. You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full.
IMPORTANT! ASTM Rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.
ADVANCE DEPOSIT: The Sheraton Centre requires a credit card to guarantee your reservation.
CONFIRMATION NOTICES: A confirmation number is provided to you electronically once your reservation has been submitted.
CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Sheraton Centre, notice of cancellation must be received 24 hours prior to arrival date.

AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE: Airport Express Shuttle is available at the baggage claim terminal. The shuttle runs every 30 minutes at a cost of $23.95 one way and $40.00 round trip. Taxis cost approximately $58.
