C26 Nuclear Fuel Cycle
Event Name: C26 June 2014 Meeting
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The 2nd Zirconium Alloy Cladding/Hydride Workshop will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 10-12, 2014. Sponsored by ASTM Committee C26.13 on Spent Fuel and High Level Waste, the workshop will be held at the Snow King Resort & Grand View Lodge in Jackson Hole, WY, in conjunction with the C26 standards development meetings of the committee.

Objective
The purpose of the workshop is to share, through presentations and discussions, the information necessary to develop a global position on the effects of hydrides on the properties of zirconium alloys. The white paper summary of the workshop will be designed to serve as a starting point for an ASTM International Standard addressing regulatory concerns regarding the impact of hydrides on the long term performance of irradiated zirconium alloys. Topics to be covered include:

  • Hydriding and hydride characterization techniques
  • Hydride distribution and orientation in irradiated cladding: hydrogen content, hydride rims, end of life stresses on cladding
  • Reproducing irradiated hydride distributions and morphologies in non-irradiated alloys
  • Hydride precipitation and orientation: role of clad chemistry, manufacturing process and service history
  • Hydride reorientation: role of stress, hydrogen content, hydride distribution and thermal cycling
  • Effects of hydrides on long-term cladding performance: experimental measurements and data interpretation
  • Drying experience: actual cladding temperatures and stresses and post drying hydride morphologies
  • Ductile-to-brittle transitions and transition temperatures in hydrogen containing alloys
  • Effects of radiation on hydrogen solubility and hydride precipitation
  • Models to predict effects of hydrogen and hydrides on cladding behavior and performance

Prospective participants should e-mail both Brady.Hanson@pnnl.gov and robert.sindelar@srnl.doe.gov. Participants interested in making a 20 minute presentation should include a 500 word abstract in the e-mail by April 30. Discussion will follow all presentations. A more detailed program will be distributed after the abstracts have been received.
