Symposia / General InformationB05 Copper and Copper Alloys
Event Name: April 2012 Committee Week
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.
ABOUT THE EVENT
A Workshop on Advances in Copper Wire Making will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Sponsored by ASTM Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, the workshop will be held at the Sheraton Phoenix in Phoenix, AZ, in conjunction with the April standards development meetings of the committee.
The Workshop will provide advances in Copper wire making with some emphasis on recent improvements in continuous casting. The talk summarizes some developments that have occurred in the mining and subsequent manufacture of copper rod from 9000 BC until the present time. Principles and practices associated with continuous rod production are presented from a metallurgical perspective, and include the effects of oxygen content, impurities, and rod cleaning methods.
Likewise, a brief historical review is given of important changes to ASTM copper rod standards, and to wire drawing events dating back several thousand years. Finally, predictions are made concerning the future of the wire and cable industry with particular emphasis on copper wire, technology in this market, and competitive materials.
The Workshop will include a slide show with Dr. Horace Pops of B05, B01, Fellow of ASM, currently a Consultant, and formerly director of Metals Laboratory at Superior Essex Industries. The talk will draw upon his paper titled "A History of Copper, Continuous Casting, and Wire Drawing: The Past 11,000 Years and Beyond" which will be available to attendees.
Online registration opens approximately 8 weeks before the workshop and closes April 11, 2012.The fees to attend this workshop are listed below. There is no fee to attend the workshop.
