    ABOUT THE EVENT

    The Symposium on the Mechanism of Concussion in Sports, sponsored by ASTM Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities and its Subcommittee on Medical Aspects and Biomechanics, in cooperation with the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and USA Hockey will be held at the Hyatt Regency, Tuesday, November 13, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia in conjunction with the November 14-16, 2012 ASTM standards development meetings of Committee F08.

    Objective

    The Symposium on the Mechanism of Concussion in Sports, sponsored by ASTM Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities and its Subcommittee on Medical Aspects and Biomechanics, in cooperation with the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and USA Hockey will be held at the Hyatt Regency, Tuesday, November 13, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia in conjunction with the November 14-16, 2012 ASTM standards development meetings of Committee F08.

    Objective
    This symposium is a follow up to a similar meeting held on November 20, 2000 in Orlando, Florida. The objective of the symposium is to review the current state of the art and science of the mechanism of concussion in sports, with the possibility of developing methods and techniques for decreasing the risk for concussions and possibly the prevention of concussions in sports.

    Papers will be presented on:

    • Studies on specific mechanical forces that cause concussions
    • Techniques to decrease concussive forces to the head
    • The effects of hydration before, after, and during sports competition on the decreasing the effect of concussive forces
    • The effects of diet on decreasing the effect of concussive forces
    • The effect of the use of different type of mouth guards and how these mouth guards can decrease the effect of concussive forces
    • Coaching and training techniques that can decrease the effect of concussive forces to the head

    The language of the symposium will be English.

    REGISTRATION INFORMATION

    Online registration is currently open and closes November 7. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below.

    These fees include:
    -the Tuesday evening reception (hosted bar)
    -the cost of the resulting Selected Technical Papers (STP that will be sent to all symposium attendees). The STP is a printed volume of peer-reviewed symposium papers.

    Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID. The waived fee includes admission to the technical sessions, but does not include the STP described above.

    All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the symposium. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at symposium.

    CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS

    Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the symposium, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the symposium.

    HOTEL INFORMATION

    All meetings will be held at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, 265 Peachtree St., NE, Atlanta, GA 30303. Reservations can be made by telephoning the hotel at 800-233-1234.     Group rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full but no later than October 10, 2012. ASTM rates are $149 single/double plus 16% tax (you must mention ASTM in order to receive a group rate). You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full.

    U.S. GOVERNMENT RATES: The Hyatt Regency Atlanta has a limited number of rooms at the Government per diem rate of $133.

    IMPORTANT! ASTM Rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.

    ADVANCE DEPOSIT: The Hyatt Regency Atlanta requires a credit card to guarantee your reservation.

    CONFIRMATION NOTICES: The Hyatt Regency Atlanta Reservation Center sends confirmations by email.

    CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, notice of cancellation must be received by 3:00pm, 24 hours prior to arrival date.

    AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE: Link Airport Shuttle Service is available at the ground transportation terminal. The cost is $16.50 one way and $29 round trip. Taxis cost approximately $35.

    MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) - From inside Hartsfield International Airport, MARTA runs Monday thru Friday from 5:00am thru 1:00am every 20 minutes and on weekends and holidays from 5:00am thru 12:30am every 25 minutes. The cost for MARTA is $2.50 one way.

    PARKING: Valet parking is available at $32 per day with in and out privileges.


    DRESS AND WEATHER

    Members have the option to determine their dress at ASTM meetings. Business casual attire is acceptable at this meeting and appropriate for Atlanta. The average temperatures in November range from a high of 63 degrees to a low of 41 degrees.
