ABOUT THE EVENT

A Workshop on Verification of Life Prediction Software will be held Wednesday May 9, 2012. Sponsored by ASTM Committee E08.04 on Fatigue and Fracture, the workshop will be held at the Sheraton Phoenix in Phoenix, AZ, in conjunction with the May standards development meetings of Committee.

Objective
The increased use of modeling offers the potential for significant benefits to all aspects of engineering, including reduced development and testing time and cost. The issue of verification and validation (V&V) of structural and life prediction models and methods has been identified as a critical issue in the acceptance of modeling to reduce or eliminate testing in areas where structural integrity is critical. While other engineering disciplines, such as computational fluid mechanics and computational solid mechanics, are working to address V&V in a systematic and rigorous manner, the same is currently not the case in the fatigue and fracture community served by ASTM E08.

ASTM sub-committee E08.04 on Structural Applications is sponsoring this workshop on "Verification and Validation of Solid Mechanics and Life Prediction Software" to bring together life prediction software developers, users, certifying agencies, and technical specialists that are familiar with V&V of software in other fields (e.g. solid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, etc.). This workshop will form the starting point for the sub-committee's effort to develop an ASTM Guide for V&V of life prediction methods and software.
