ABOUT THE EVENT

The Seventh Symposium on Roofing Research and Standards Development will be held Sunday December 4, 2011. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, the symposium will be held at the Marriott Waterside Tampa in Tampa, Florida, in conjunction with the December standards development meetings of the committee.

Objective
ASTM Committee D08 has a firm commitment to providing a strong technical basis for its standards. From a practical point of view, the availability of data helps to accelerate the standards development process as decisions can be made on fact and not opinion. This symposium on Roofing Research and Standards Development will be the seventh in a series that dates back to the mid- 1980s. The symposium also provides a forum contributing to the fundamental understanding of acceptable roof performance. The primary emphasis for the symposium is on current research and development work. Consistent with the title of the symposium series, it is anticipated that the authors, as well as the attendees, will make recommendations identifying areas where standard specifications, test methods, and practices can be developed, or improved, in support of proper selection and use of roofing and waterproofing. Discussions regarding the suitability of such recommendations for consideration in the ASTM standards development process are expected to ensue.

The symposium will center on the influence of both laboratory and field investigations in the development of standards for roofing and waterproofing materials and systems. The symposium is intended to address topics describing research and standards development for both low-sloped and steep roofing systems including the following:

  • Roof system durability and service life prediction
  • Roofing in a sustainability era
  • Synthetic single-ply roofing systems
  • Polymer-modified and conventional built-up bituminous roofing
  • Self-adhesive membrane roofing
  • Liquid-applied membrane roofing
  • Advances in reinforcing fabrics for bituminous roofing
  • Advances in adhesion technology for synthetic and bituminous roofing
  • Spray polyurethane foam roofing systems
  • Metal roofing systems
  • Performance of shingles, tiles and other steep roof coverings
  • Wind and fire resistance
  • Environmental factors such as cool roofing and vegetative (green) roofing
  • Technology of roof coatings
  • Impact of computer technology and simulation on roofing standards development
  • Advances in waterproofing

The targeted audience is all roofing professionals, including contractors, architects, engineers, consultants, building owners, researchers, technologists, technicians, sales and marketing personnel, product development specialists, and insurers.

The language of the symposium will be English.
