Committee on Pesticides to Host Seminar on Over-the-Counter Topicals and Label Claims Against Viruses

ASTM Committee E35 on Pesticides and Alternative Control Agents is hosting a one-day seminar titled “Over the Counter Topicals: Assessing the Need for Testing and Label Claims Against Viruses” on Oct. 8. The workshop, which is being organized by Subcommittee E35.15 on Antimicrobials, will occur during the ASTM Committee Week in Washington, D.C. Subcommittee E35.15 is responsible for developing standards for disinfectants and antiseptics.

The main objective of the seminar is to bring together regulators, manufacturers, researchers and end users of over-the-counter topicals to discuss the need for testing and label claims against viruses. “Many types of human and animal pathogenic viruses can survive well on hands,” says Dr. M. Khalid Ijaz, chair of the Anti-Viral Task Force working within Subcommittee E35.15. “In spite of this, there are currently no regulations on testing and label claims against viruses.” Dr. Ijaz hopes that the seminar will help to highlight the significance of viruses in public health and catalyze discussion on the need for regulatory action.
