ASTM Roll Roofing Specification D 6380 Replaces Three Withdrawn Standards

ASTM D 6380, Standard Specification for Asphalt Roll Roofing (Organic Felt), replaces the following documents discontinued in 2002:

• D 224, Standard Specification for Smooth-Surfaced Asphalt Roll Roofing (Organic Felt);
• D 249, Standard Specification for Asphalt Roll Roofing (Organic Felt) Surfaced with Mineral Granules; and
• D 371, Standard Specification for Asphalt Roll Roofing (Organic Felt) Surfaced with Mineral Granules; Wide Selvage.

Members of Committee D08 on Roofing, Waterproofing and Bituminous Materials developed D 6380 in 1999 and re-approved it in 2001.

It covers asphalt roofing in sheet form (in widths agreed upon between the purchaser and the producer/supplier) composed of asphalt-saturated organic felt coated on both sides with asphalt. Class M and WS rolls are surfaced on the (exposed) weather side with mineral granules, except for any selvage. Class S rolls are surfaced with powdered talc, mica, or other fine mineral matter to prevent sticking.

Standard D 6380 combines information, requirements and tests for smooth rolls, granulated rolls, and wide selvage roofing formerly contained in the three separates, says Andy Lodge, manager, Research and Quality Control, IKO Industries, Ltd., Brampton, Ontario. It has also been enhanced by the addition of better tests and mass specifications in Table 1, he says.

Lodge chaired a task group of roofing professionals who developed D 6380. “The Canadian roll roofing standards have been combined for many years. It’s good to see ASTM has harmonized somewhat with the CSA specifications,” he notes. “Although manufacturers have begun to convert literature and packaging to refer to the new standard, some building codes may still reference the older individual standards. Therefore specifiers and roofers may need to clarify this with local building officials until the codes have been appropriately revised.”
