New ASTM International Digital Library

November marks a new era for ASTM International customers, members and staff.

That’s when ASTM’s new online Digital Library launches, providing access to electronic versions of nearly all of ASTM’s publications, enabling users to instantly access any book, paper, or chapter from nearly every piece of work published by ASTM. With over 40,000 papers and more than 400,000 pages of information, the library is a vast repository of technical research literature going back to the early 1900s. Until recently, the overwhelming majority of these papers have only been available in a print format.

Unprecedented in its convenience and comprehensiveness, the ASTM Digital Library will forever change how users access information from ASTM, providing a self-service environment where they can instantly download as much or as little information as they need.

Comprehensive, Credible Resource

The Digital Library will prove itself one of the best scientific resources available considering the enormous amount of information that has been generated by the tens of thousands of technical experts participating on the more than 140 ASTM technical committees that have existed over the years.

Included in the continuously growing library is:

• 945 Special Technical Publications
• 52 manuals and monographs
• Over 13,000 journal articles
• Over 40,000 papers and chapters

The Digital Library is being rolled out in phases. At launch, it will provide access to over 900 ASTM STPs, which will be available as digital books in PDF format. In addition, the entire backfile of ASTM’s journals will be available by the end of 2007. By the end of 2006, ASTM will have a complete digital workflow so that every new product will be available in digital format.

Meeting User Needs

• Need only one STP paper, not the entire STP?
• Need just a chapter or two, not an entire manual?
• Need all the ASTM papers or chapters ever written about widgets?

The ASTM Digital Library makes this all possible and is a direct result of feedback from members and customers. In the past several years, there’s been a dramatic increase in the demand for products in digital format. In addition to faster delivery, a digital format enables ASTM to meet users’ very specific information needs and, perhaps most significantly, it provides an archival resource that makes “out of print” an obsolete term.

Full-Text Searchability Helps You Find All the Information You Need

Another benefit of the Digital Library to the scientific and technical research community is that the Digital Library will be full-text searchable. Researchers will be able to target the essential information they need buried within hundreds of thousands of pages, thanks to the library’s robust full-text search. Keyword and phrase searching will allow users to pinpoint papers they might never have found otherwise. The library also allows users to perform fielded searches, such as searching for papers by title, author, date of publication, and keyword fields.

Standards Next

The Digital Library will be a multi-phase project to keep pace with the needs of ASTM’s members and customers. The next steps in development will be seamless linking between the Digital Library and ASTM’s vast collection of world-class standards documents as well as the print-on-demand publishing of e-books.

The Digital Library is exciting news, both for ASTM members and customers as well as for authors. Its launch means that valuable research will always be available and searchable. What’s more, ASTM has partnered with Google Book Search and Google Scholar to ensure even wider exposure to finding these important papers.

Numerous subscription and download options are available — from a subscription to the entire library or specific segments, to downloading a single document or e-book. Searching the library is free to all users. //
