Innovations in the equations and other analytical tools that engineers have used when designing close-fit liners for plastic pipe have led to a need for a new standard for design calculations. This need will be met by a proposed new ASTM International standard, WK29237, Practice for the Design Calculations of Close-Fit Liners.
The proposed new standard is being developed by Subcommittee F17.67 on Trenchless Plastic Pipeline Technology, part of ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.
“We expect to present a design practice that covers not only circular pipe installations but noncircular installations as well,” says Ed Kampbell, pipeline rehabilitation technologies specialist, Jason Consultants, and a member of F17.
“The design process will benefit the practicing engineer and the owners of rehabilitated pipelines,” says Kampbell. “Close-fit liner systems are numerous and provide diverse solutions to the world’s pipeline rehabilitation needs. We need to make sure we are using the best deployable design methodologies to ensure their proper application.”
All interested parties are invited to participate in the development of WK29237. Kampbell says that anyone who possesses an engineering or technical ability in soil-structure interaction systems and buckling of confined cylinders is particularly encouraged to join F17.67.
