Accelerated Laboratory Testing
In the Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation Act, the U.S. Congress indicated the need for an aging test for light vehicle tires. Since no industry or government standard addressed this subject, ASTM Committee F09 on Tires developed F2838, Practice for Accelerated Laboratory Aging of Radial Passenger Car and Light Truck Tires Through Load Range E for the Laboratory Generation of Belt Separation. The new standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee F09.30 on Laboratory (Non-Vehicular) Testing.
The primary users of F2838 will be tire and vehicle manufacturers, testing organizations and, potentially, tire regulatory organizations.
In the future, F2838 will be able to be used in conjunction with another new standard, F2779, Practice for Commercial Radial Truck-Bus Tires to Establish Equivalent Test Severity Between a 1.707-m (67.23-in.) Diameter Roadwheel and a Flat Surface, to gauge the ability of a tire to resist belt edge separation, a condition that may occur in long-term service.
Individuals or organizations with expertise in tires and tire test development are welcome to join in the activities of F09.30 and the aged tire durability task group that developed F2838.
