ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products has approved a new standard, A1059/A1059M, Specification for Zinc Alloy Thermo-Diffusion Coatings (TDC) on Steel Fasteners, Hardware and Other Products. The new standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee A05.13 on Structural Shapes and Hardware Specifications.
The technology described in A1059 has, over the last 15 years, become a popular means for providing an environmentally friendly way to replace toxic materials, such as cadmium and chromium compounds, used for corrosion protection.
According to Moshe Moked, president, M-Tech Inc., and an A05 member, A1059 will be useful in any application in which cost-effective, high performance corrosion protection is needed. “The primary users will be producers and applicators providing corrosion protection to hardware parts such as fasteners, infrastructure elements like structural members, automotive, agricultural and military parts,” says Moked.
