March/April 2009 Structural Tubing
The new standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee A05.11 on Sheet Specifications, part of ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products. ASTM A1057 classifies the coating weights and mechanical requirements inherent in the galvanizing process. Original equipment manufacturers will be able to reference the new standard in their specifications to more accurately describe their purchase products. “ASTM A1057 will be extremely helpful for existing customers and markets but will also assist new customers in developing their internal specifications to ensure clarity and consistency of the products,” says Giulio Scartozzi, metallurgical manager, Allied Tube & Conduit, and a member of Committee A05. “The primary users of the standard will be new and existing customers of continuously galvanized steel products, including, but not limited to, structural and mechanical engineers, federal and state agencies and industry associations,” says Scartozzi.
