New Global Cooperation Section Debuts on the ASTM Web Site

Offering global access to fully transparent standards development is an integral part of the mission of ASTM International. A new section of ASTM’s Web site titled Global Cooperation now provides a single location where Web site visitors can learn about global activity within ASTM and can access information on international standardization. The following nine areas are covered under Global Cooperation:

1) Memorandums of Understanding Program
Since 2001, ASTM has signed memorandums of understanding with 44 national standards bodies. This section offers a listing of the countries whose national standards bodies have entered into MOUs with ASTM International. Organized alphabetically by country, the logos, links, and Web site addresses of the various national standards bodies are provided.

2) WTO and ASTM International Standards
This section explains the World Trade Organization’s Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement and the ways in which ASTM International complies with the principles to which an organization engaged in the development of international standards must conform.

3) Join the ASTM Global Community
Links in this part of the Web site lead to information on different ASTM membership options, particularly for technical experts in countries with which ASTM International has an MOU agreement and for individuals from China, who can apply for ASTM membership directly through contacts located in China.

4) Worldwide Standards Development Online
ASTM’s electronic tools open up ASTM standards development to any participant with an Internet connection, thus facilitating global participation, enhancing worldwide input, and expediting the time it takes to develop standards. This section includes valuable information on membership, online balloting, virtual meetings and forums, work items and the standards tracking system.

5) ASTM International Open House Initiative
The Open House initiative provides opportunities for information exchange among regional standardization partners. Since 2001, ASTM International has hosted three Open House events at its headquarters. Coverage of each of the three Open House events that have taken place at ASTM International headquarters can be found in this section.

6) International Training
Virtual training and Technical and Professional Training Courses are featured in this section. Virtual training workshops are targeted for members who have recently joined ASTM International or would like to join. The Technical and Professional Training program provides high quality, award-winning courses in the use of ASTM standards that impact a variety of technical areas.

7) Articles of Interest
This is a collection of articles from ASTM’s monthly English-language magazine, SN, that have been selected for their particular relevance to global standardization, global trade, and a global audience.

8) Information in Various Languages
Over the years, ASTM International has published a variety of information in several languages. These publications are now gathered in one place. Here, for example, viewers will find links to the electronic Chinese and the new Spanish-language editions of SN, as well as other general information on ASTM International. More items will be posted here in the future.

9) Global Offices/Contacts
This section provides information for ASTM International contacts throughout the world.

The new Global Cooperation section of ASTM’s Web site is a vital reflection of ASTM International’s mission to offer global access to fully transparent standards development. The result is the highest technical excellence in standardization throughout the world.
