|2006 Officers Training Workshop
The dates for the Officers Training Workshop are rapidly approaching. The workshop will be held Sept. 11-12 at ASTM International headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa. This is a free, biennial event open to all committee officers, subcommittee chairs and anyone interested in learning more about ASTM. The workshop offers committee leadership the opportunity to attend a series of training modules presented by ASTM staff describing various aspects of ASTM and the tools available to help you and your committees maximize the effectiveness of the ASTM process.
Registration for the workshop is now available online on ASTM’s Web site. The online registration will be open through Aug. 18. The workshop registration is similar to the online registration that members are currently using for ASTM meetings. Attendees can access the online registration by going to the ASTM homepage, www.astm.org, then clicking on the “Meetings” link on the left side of the page. Once at the ASTM Meetings page, there is a link for the Officers’ Training Workshop; simply click on this link and follow the instructions.
Attendees will be able to prepare their own schedules by choosing the training modules they would like to attend. We recommend that you limit your selections to 13 hours of training time. The training modules will be conducted in one- and two-hour sessions.
These short courses are designed to assist new officers and subcommittee chairs in performing their duties and to reinforce and refresh the knowledge base of experienced officers. The modules will cover a wide range of activities within ASTM International. For example, there will be modules on the responsibilities of main committee and subcommittee officers, which help build a strong foundation from which committee leaders can run effective meetings and provide guidance to their committee members throughout the standards development process.
Frequently, committee leaders are concerned about the proper way to handle negative votes, so one popular module covers how to ballot and handle negative votes. This module clearly explains ASTM procedures and policies for handling negative votes and should alleviate any concerns about this process.
New to the workshop this year is a module on “ASTM Online.” ASTM is constantly updating its Web site to make the standards development process easier for our members. This module will take you through our Web site, demonstrating the wide range of tools and services available online that will make your participation easier and help you maximize the return on the time that you invest in your ASTM efforts.
Another new module this year will provide an introduction to ASTM’s Interlaboratory Study Program, which is designed to assist committees in developing precision and bias statements for their test methods. Also, there will be modules on “ASTM in the International Arena” as well as one on ASTM’s corporate outreach efforts.
