New Edition of A6/A6M Revises Reporting Requirements for Structural Steel Made from Coil

Attention all processors and users of ASTM A 36, A 328, A 572, A 588, and A 656 produced from coil: new test report requirements are now published in subsection 14.3 of ASTM A6/A6M, Specification for General Requirements for Rolled Structural Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling, which is a mandatory part of these and many other product specifications.

For structural products produced from coil that are supplied in the as-rolled condition or have been heat treated by stress relieving only, the test report shall state “Produced from Coil.” Both test results shall be reported for each qualifying coil, and the location within the coil for each test shall be stated.

For structural products from coils, the end lap and mid lap tests performed by the processor have been requirements for many years. The change now identifies test reports for those products that require end lap and mid lap tensile tests by requiring the statement “produced from coil” to appear on the report; it results from users’ need to ensure that testing requirements were being reported correctly.
