Fence Committee Revises Standard for PVC Exterior Profiles Used in Fencing

ASTM Subcommittee F14.30 on Rigid Polymer Fence Systems has revised its PVC exterior profiles standard as F 964-01, Standard Specification for Rigid Poly (Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Exterior Profiles Used for Fencing. Re-issued in March ’02, the six-page specification sets requirements for the material and physical properties of rigid PVC exterior profiles used in agricultural, commercial, and residential fencing and railing. Standard property requirements include dimensional tolerances, extrusion quality, and weatherability. Methods for testing or identifying exterior profile extrusions that comply with this specification are also provided.

“This replaces the previous ASTM Standard F 964-94,” says Jane Miner, a vinyl fence and railing regional sales manager for Veka Innovations, Inc., Tyrone, Ga. “Important changes include the addition of railing, weatherability, and updated methods for testing,” says Miner, who participated in the development of the standard with a task group of fencing specialists. “Accessory components are also mentioned and may be made from non-PVC material,” she says, “such as corrosion resistant metal or injection-molded parts. Reference is now made to Specification D 4726 [Standard Specification for Rigid Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Exterior-Profile Extrusions Used for Assembled Windows and Doors (2001)] for exterior profiles of non-uniform exterior wall thickness or of nontubular shapes, or both.”

The material used in new Specification F 964’s exterior-profiles is limited to rigid PVC compounds in a single homogeneous extrusion or in a coextrusion of two or more PVC compounds in distinct layers. An appendix provides color-hold guidelines for manufacturer product development and quality-performance use.

Miner is current task group chair. The task group is part of Subcommittee F14.30, which operates under Committee F14 on Fences. The committee develops standards for rigid polymer fence systems providing privacy, decoration, public safety, protection, boundary and confinement.
