PUBLISHED NEW THIS YEAR, ASTM D 6511, Standard Test Method for
Solvent-Bearing Bituminous Compounds, will assist roofing industry
chemists in the sampling and testing of solvent-bearing bituminous
compounds used in roofing and waterproofing. Sampling and testing
the compounds promotes greater uniformity of shipments.
The standard will benefit testing agencies performing third party
confirmation testing, code bodies, quality control technicians
in manufacturing, and designer/specifiers of roof coatings and/or
solvent-based bituminous roof adhesives for system construction.
ASTM D 6511 was developed to consolidate all test methods for
solvent-bearing bituminous in D08.05 into one standard, says
Frank O. Moore, Jr., manager, Technical Services, Honeywell International
Inc., Cary, N.C., and chairman of the ASTM subcommittee that created
the document. Previously, several material standard specifications
contained the same test method or referenced a specification and
not a test method for physical property testing.
D 6511 was developed by a task group of Subcommittee D08.05, Solvent-Bearing
Bituminous Compounds for Roofing and Waterproofing, within Committee
D08 on Roofing, Waterproofing and Bituminous Materials. Led by
Task Group Chairman Paul A. Morris of Monsey Bakor, Kimberton,
Pa., approximately eight members represented manufacturers, consumers,
roofing contractors, roof consultants, and general interest stakeholders.
