COPANT Meeting Brings Together Representatives from American Standards Organizations

ASTM International staff members Teresa Cendrowska and Jessica Hychalk participated in the meetings of the Comisión Panamericana de Normas Técnicas (COPANT) as members of the ANSI delegation in May. The objective of COPANT, which includes 35 nations from the Caribbean and North and South America, is the development of technical standardization and related activities in its member countries with the aim of promoting their industrial, scientific and technological development to benefit the exchange of goods and the provision of services, while facilitating cooperation in intellectual, scientific and social fields. This year’s meetings were hosted by the Instituto de Normas Técnicas de Costa Rica (INTECO) in San José, Costa Rica. INTECO’s executive director, Carlos Rodríguez, is also the current president of COPANT.

The COPANT meetings were held in conjunction with the Inter American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC) and afforded the opportunity for a joint one-day seminar titled “Standardization, Certification, and Accreditation in the Region as Tools for Competitiveness.” Local businesspeople interested in the topics of trade and competitiveness, as well as COPANT participants, attended the workshop.

The central location of the meetings enabled Cendrowska, director for external relations, and Hychalk, manager, global cooperation, to meet with representatives from several of the national standards bodies of the attending nations, including many that have signed memorandums of understanding with ASTM.

Cendrowska and Hychalk, together with a representative of INTECO, also took the opportunity to visit the Costa Rican Chamber of Industry as well as the Costa Rican Chamber of Construction after the conclusion of the COPANT meeting. Each meeting afforded an opportunity to share information and address questions about ASTM International as well as the benefits to industry of the recently signed MOU with INTECO. //
