Registration and Marking
As part of its ongoing work supporting the Federal Aviation Administration to develop a Special Federal Aviation Regulation for small unmanned aircraft systems, ASTM International Committee F38 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems is currently working on a proposed registration and marking standard.
WK27055, Specification for the Registration and Marking of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Excluding Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems) is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee F38.01 on Airworthiness. WK27055 sets up the proper paperwork necessary to assure the FAA that the sUAS has the documentation necessary and submitted to allow the FAA to give the operator a permit. The sUAS operator will then obtain the necessary documents from the FAA.
“WK27055, especially once it is recognized for use with the sUAS regulation by FAA, establishes the list of requirements, so it is one of the initial documents the builder or operator will need to ensure they have the proper information to get the permit to operate,” says Rocky Gmeiner, Raytheon Co., and F38.01 chairman. “Other standards will be developed for the required documents listed in WK27055.”
All interested parties to participate in the development of WK27055 and other F38.01 standards. “We could use any UAS industry operational or academic help,” says Gmeiner. “This is a real opportunity to help develop the standards for initial flights of sUAS in the United States.”
