Call for Papers for Tribology Workshop

MARCH 7 is the deadline for submission of papers on tribology problem solving techniques, and real case studies for the workshop, “Approaches to Wear Problem Solving: Real Case Studies” to be presented May 11 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., by ASTM Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion, and the Society of Triobologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). The scope of the workshop encompasses extensive tribological phenomena dealing with friction and wear of both dry and lubricated contacts.

Speakers are sought from academia and industry for presentations related to problem-solving and practical case studies. An abstract of about 200 words is required for consideration by the program committee. Also by March 7, descriptions of real failures or tribological design problems are sought, which a panel of experienced tribologists will address at the workshop. The statement of the problem should provide details of the tribological system in terms of loading, sliding conditions, environment and materials involved.

The session will start with general papers covering the approaches to solving wear and friction problems and will be followed by the case studies of some real problems. The final part of the program features the panel discussion on pre-submitted real wear and friction problems. If time allows, additional unsubmitted case study problems will be addressed.

To enable an open discussion of industrial problems that may contain proprietary aspects, publication of workshop papers or recording of the problem-solving session will not occur. In addition, photographs will not be taken of visual aids used by the speakers.

Please submit hard copies of papers and real case study reports by March 7 via post or fax to Dr. Ray Bayer, 4609 Marshall West Drive West, Vestal, NY 13850 (fax: 607/722-5391).

Questions may be directed to Dr. Shyam Bahadur (workshop chairman), Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011(515/294-7658; fax: 515/294-3261); Dr. Ken Budinski, Senior Metallurgist, Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, NY 14652 (716/477-2027; fax: 716/477-0603); or Dr. Ray Bayer, Tribology Consultant, Vestal, NY 13850 (607/ 722-7916; fax: 607/722-5391).
