Committee C12 first organized
1937
Reorganization meeting of Committee C12 provides first record of officers, scope, approved bylaws, and establishes subcommittee on methods of test.
1938
Three additional standing subcommittees established:
Specifications for Mortar Sand, for Mortar Workability and Plasticity
1939
First tentative standard published: ASTM C 144-39T, Tentative Specification for Aggregate for Masonry Mortar
1941
First mortar specification published: ASTM C 161-41T, Tentative Specification for Mortar for Reinforced Brick Masonry, contained alternate property and proportion specifications
1942
All subcommittees except Workability and Plasticity discharged because of work connected with the war that was being done by members.
1951
ASTM C 270-51 T, Tentative Specification for Mortar for Unit Masonry, published, containing alternate property and proportion specifications and mortar type designations: A-1, A-2, B, C, and D.
1954
Mortar type designations were changed for Specification
C 270-54T changed to M, S, N, O, and K.
1957
ASTM C 404-57T, Tentative Specification for Aggregate
for Masonry Grout, published.
1958
An informal symposium on mortars held in St. Louis
with around 100 in attendance.
1961
ASTM C 476-61T, Tentative Specification for Mortar
and Grout for Reinforced Masonry.
1968
ASTM C 270-64T, Tentative Specification for Mortar
for Unit Masonry becomes ASTM C 270-68, Standard
Specification for Mortar for Unit Masonry.
1973
A short appendix providing guidance on selection
of mortar type added to ASTM C 270-73.
1974
First ASTM Masonry Symposium conducted jointly with C07 on Lime and C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. ASTM Special Technical Publication of proceedings published in 1975.
ASTM C 780-74, Method for Field Testing of Mortar, approved.
1978
ASTM C 887-78, Specification for Packaged, Dry, Combined
Material for Surface Bonding Mortar approved.
1980
ASTM C 270-80a includes additional information
in appendix on mortar selection.
ASTM C 476-80 limits scope of standard to grout
for reinforced and non reinforced unit masonry.
1981
ASTM C 946-81, Practice for Construction of Dry-Stacked,
Surface-Bonded Walls approved.
1982
Subcommittee C12.98 Long Range Planning established
Significant revisions in ASTM C 270-82a clarify scope as including mortar for reinforced and nonreinforced masonry and distinguish between proportion and property specifications.
1984
ASTM C 1019-84 on Sampling and Testing Grout approved.
1989
An extensive explanatory appendix added to ASTM C 270-89.
1990
ASTM C 1148-90, Test Method for Measuring
Drying Shrinkage of Mortar approved.
ASTM C 1142-90, Specification for Ready-Mixed Mortar approved.
