International Standards on Zinc Discussed this November in Orlando
All those interested in the development of international zinc
standards are encouraged to attend the meetings of the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC)
18 on Zinc and Zinc Alloys in Orlando, Fla., hosted during ASTM
Committee Week, Nov. 15-17 at the Omni Rosen Hotel. Membership
is not required to attend.
Three subgroups will meet at the hotel prior to the convening
of ISO TC 18 on Nov. 17, to forward the development and/or revision
of international zinc standards.
-- SC 1 on Analytical Methods and Sampling meets Nov. 15. (Begin
and end times will be available closer to meeting date.) SC1 is
reviewing numerous standards for analytical chemical methods and
sampling to gain an international consensus on these methods,
and when appropriate, to arrange for worldwide interlaboratory
testing to qualify these methods.
-- SC 2 on Zinc Casting
Alloys and Ingot meets Nov. 15. SC2 is developing a revision to
ISO 301 on Zinc Casting Alloy Ingot to update the last revision
in 1981. Following this effort, a separate standard covering zinc
alloy castings will be developed.
-- SC 3 on Primary Zinc meets Nov. 16. SC3 has drafted a revision
to ISO 752 on Primary Zinc.
This revision is intended to contain grades of primary zinc used
worldwide and will be the first standard to integrate and harmonize
zinc standards used in the various major regions of the world
on an international basis.
The U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is organizing the meeting
through two subgroups of ASTM Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys:
-- B02.95 on International Zinc Standards, chaired by Steve Ash,
Big River Zinc, Ill.; and
-- B02.95.01, U.S. TAG to ISO TC 18 on Zinc and Zinc Alloys, chaired
by Richard Lynch, Lynch & Associates, Inc., NJ.
The chairmen invite zinc stakeholders to make their voice count
by participating in these groups.
