ABOUT THE EVENT
A Workshop on Modularity and Tapers in Total Joint Replacement Devices will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Sponsored by ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, the workshop will be held at the Hyatt Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida, in conjunction with the November standards development meetings of the committee.
Objective
The purpose of this Workshop is to provide a forum for consensus development and scientific exchange on the needs for characterization and standardized testing related to modularity and tapers used in total joint replacement devices. The main focus of this Workshop is to address unmet standardization needs and to help establish best testing practices in the following four areas:
- Characterization of Adverse Local Tissue Reactions
- Advancements in In Vitro Models for Taper Corrosion
- Retrieval Analyses of Retrieved Modular Implant Interfaces and
- Taper Connections
Each topic of interest will be introduced by a keynote outlining the unmet clinical need for standardization. Following clinical motivation provided by the keynote, invited speakers will present methodological innovations relevant to the key topic. Finally, the treatment of each topic of interest will be concluded by a discussion of elements in each presentation that merit consideration for standardization.
