Each year, ASTM International sponsors a student for the Washington Internship for Students of Engineering (WISE). This year's intern, Ashley Vincent, the Idaho state representative for the University of Idaho's chapter of Engineers Without Borders as well as a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the University of Idaho Davis Student Investment Group presented her policy paper titled, "Outgrowing the Band-Aid: The Contribution of Codes and Standards to the Long-Term Viability of Foreign Assistance" on August 4th in Washington DC. Staff from the International Code Council as well as InterAction was in the audience to hear her presentation. Each year, the WISE societies select outstanding 3rd or 4th year engineering students in a nation-wide competition. The students spend nine weeks in the summer in Washington, D.C. During the internship they learn how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions.
