The programs of the meetings sponsored by the Detroit District are usually on subjects related to the automotive industry on account of the interest in this subject in the Detroit area. In the current year, 1947–1948, the Detroit District is honored by the election of one of its members, Mr. T. A. Boyd, as president of American Society for Testing Materials. Mr. Boyd was chairman of A.S.T.M. Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants for many years. In 1947 Committee D-2 held its fall meeting in Detroit. As a result of this combination of circumstances, it seemed particularly appropriate to hold a joint meeting of the Detroit District and Committee D-2 and to have the subject of this meeting, “Petroleum Products as Related to Automotive Equipment.” Automobiles and petroleum products are such a common part of the life of all of us that we are prone to overlook their importance. With approximately 36 million cars, busses, and trucks on the roads at the present time, and counting only 85 horse power for each unit, there is a total of three billion horse power available to take care of our transportation needs, exclusive of railroads and ships. When we realize that it requires two million barrels of gasoline per day to feed these “mechanical horses,” and enormous amounts of lubricants of various kinds to enable them to do the work we demand of them, we begin to have some conception of the very large multiplier attached to even small gains in efficiency and performance. Because of the magnitude of the oil and automotive industries and their importance to the American way of life, it is fitting for the American Society for Testing Materials to do what it can to encourage cooperation between these two industries, and to promote developments that will increase their efficiency so that they may continue to serve the public and to improve upon the fine record they have already established.
