I should like to think that the chairman of this symposium committee selected me on the basis of some achievement other than that of having reached a ripe old age! Nevertheless, I must admit that my experience goes back to the summer of 1919 and that since my graduation from college in 1920, my career has been devoted entirely to the science of bituminology and, incidentally, continuously with the same consulting organization which I now head. In this paper I should like to outline the development of asphaltic paving mixtures from their beginning and to trace the history of test methods and specifications pertaining to that field. From almost the very beginning ASTM has played an active part in the development of these standards.
