Introduction to Session I

Source

I should like to acknowledge the really wonderful job that Roy Klett has done in organizing this symposium. I would also like to acknowledge the financial contribution which was made to our symposium committee by the Division of Refining, Committee on Petroleum Products of the Am. Petroleum Inst. They have underwritten the nominal cost for the preparation of this symposium. As a result, there has been no registration fee. For about fifteen years or more, Research Division IV of ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has been working on the standardization of the methods of tests for the hydrocarbon analysis of petroleum gases, gasolines, solvents, jet fuels, kerosine, and the like. Research Division IV of ASTM Committee D-2 has never done any work on the standardization of methods and tests for the determination of hydrocarbons boiling above 600 F. About two years ago the interest in this subject was such that a study was made on the standardization of experimental methods. To develop information on the subject, a small committee was set up to collect authoritative papers. Papers were invited from some twenty-five of the top authorities on hydrocarbon analysis of petroleum oils, both in the United States and in England. We were gratified to receive offers for so many papers.
