This Symposium on Lubricating Oils presents the results of some of the activities of Research Division III and of Technical Committee B of ASTM Committee D-2. ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants is concerned with specifications, standard test methods, and recommended practices in the field of petroleum products and lubricants. Research Division III is responsible for the development and standardization of physical and chemical methods, and research and development projects for the determination of elements in petroleum, petroleum products, and additives used in petroleum products. Technical Committee B, on the other hand, is concerned with the specifications, methods of test, and nomenclature for lubricating oils. Research Division III is happy to join with Technical Committee B in sponsoring this symposium. In addition to these responsibilities, problems of a technical service nature are often considered. This type of service offers an excellent opportunity for consumers and producers to meet together in cooperative effort to overcome mutual problems in the use of petroleum, its products, or lubricants. These technical service studies require extensive research by the member laboratories to develop satisfactory answers to these problems.
