Discontinuities in Cast and Wrought Products that can be Revealed by Non-Destructive Tests

Source

The ASTM Tentative Industrial Radiographic Terminology for the Radiographic Inspection of Castings and Weldments (E 52-49 T), is illustrated by prints representing typical discontinuities for each subdivision. The sensitivity limitations and important applications are briefly described for four extensively used non-destructive tests—radiographic, fluorescent penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic methods. An attempt is made to define the discontinuities in the ASTM Terminology that are likely to be detected in non-ferrous and ferrous castings and welds by these four tests. There is also some discussion of the types of discontinuities that may be revealed in wrought products by these methods.
