    Abstract

    In an attempt to obtain data on the action of the muscles in the lower extremity in the course of a ski fall, in particular during the release phase of safety bindings, we have implemented a measuring system for the combined measurement and recording of electromyographic activities, binding reaction forces, and the kinematic aspect of the body motion of a test skier during a controlled fall. The electromyographic activities are processed by a computer to obtain approximate force curves of the investigated muscles by a suitable digital signal analysis. The kinematic data are processed by a computer-assisted motion analysis system to obtain the angles, the angular velocities, and the angular accelerations of the joint motions of the lower extremity in their sagittal aspect. The system has been applied in a first series of 120 controlled frontal falls with varying initial conditions. The data thus obtained are currently being analyzed.
