Abstract

Carburization of iron specimens by contamination from the electron microscope had previously been observed. In more recent experiments, carburization did not occur. The difference in behavior was traced to a difference in the pump oil used. These results support the view that the diffusion pump oil is an important source of contamination in the electron microscope.
