Abstract

ASTM test procedures and product specifications are not available for the relatively new cationic asphalt emulsions. These are needed to insure product quality and uniformity and to give some indication of field performance. This paper presents a series of tests found useful in evaluating cationic asphalt emulsions. In addition to the product quality and uniformity test, such as residue, sieve, and viscosity, functional tests indicative of field performance are included. An example is the stone coating — water resistance test used as a performance test for coarse aggregate mixing cationic asphalt emulsions. Modifications of existing ASTM emulsion tests are discussed. Completely new tests are described in detail with supporting data. Product specifications are recommended for cationic asphalt emulsions. New tests which have no counterpart in current nationwide specifications for anionic emulsion systems are the particle charge test, the spin test, the stone coating — water resistance test, and a modified ASTM adhesion test.
