Variable-Amplitude Fatigue Tests of Aluminum-Alloy Specimens

Source

Two series of axial-load and rotating-beam fatigue tests of aluminum-alloy specimens subjected to constant and varying amplitudes of stress are reviewed. Stress spectra for variable-amplitude tests simulated the gust-frequency spectrum in both series of tests and two additional arbitrary spectra in rotating-beam tests. The axial-load test series included tests in which the sequence of loading was varied systematically. Data are compared on the basis of the linear cumulative-damage rule to study effects of sequence, mean stress, spectrum shape, frequency of repeating the load schedule, and others. Supporting or conflicting information in the literature are cited.
