    Abstract

    Surface texture, roughness, true surface area, and surface geometry are functionally significant for many phenomena, such as adsorption, wetting, and adhesion.

    This paper is concerned with the relation of surface texture to wetting and adhesion. These studies were given impetus by the renewed controversies concerning both the validity of the Wenzel (1,2) and Young-Dupré (3,4) equations, and Baumann's (5) derivation of Zisman's (6–10) linear relationship between cosine of wetting angle (cos θ) and 2 The boldface numbers in parentheses refer to the list of references appended to this paper.
