    Abstract

    A vane tester for determining the in-place shearing resistance of saturated clayey soils has been devised with the principal features of a controlled rate of testing and a simplified, accurate method of stress measurement. The instrument applies a balanced-moment torsional force to the vanes and permits measurements of stresses which are not affected by friction in the loading mechanism. Also, the instrument is sturdily constructed for field use and is adapted to standard drilling and exploration methods. Data obtained during deep foundation investigations in soft soils are also presented.
