Abstract

The radiation-induced decomposition of Na2SO4, Na2 SO410H20, MgSO47H2O, ZnSO46H2O, CuSO25H2O, Cr2SO415H20, Cr2SO4 aq., NiSO46H20, MnSO4H20 and CoSO47H20 has been studied. Oxidation of the cation occurs only in NiSO46H20 and MnSO4H20. Reduction of the SO4−− occurs only in NiSO46H20. The remaining sulfate hydrates decompose to yield H2 and O2 only in very low yields. A mechanism is given to explain the observed results.
