Automatic polishers and automated methods for the preparation of metallographic specimens are discussed, as well as the theories and mechanism of specimen polishing. Currently available automatic polishing equipment is described and, where available, techniques for their use are presented. Representative results from some of these polishers are shown. The arrangement of automatic polishers currently in use at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories is described.
