It is well known that all molecules vibrate with certain definite frequencies, the number of different vibrations possible being 3N-6, where N is the number of atoms in the molecule. The frequencies of these various vibrations are determined by only (a) the masses of the atoms in the molecule and their geometric arrangement, and (b) the various force fields between the atoms. A knowledge of the vibrations of a molecule can hence lead to an intimate knowledge of the structure of the molecule, if we are but clever enough to make the proper interpretations.
