Abstract

Techniques useful for the electron metallography of aluminum alloys are discussed, with particular reference to the aluminum oxide replica technique. The advantages of chemical polishing over conventional polishing methods are mentioned and the details of recent methods for preparing oxide-film replicas are given. A triple replica method which uses a plastic replica, an evaporated aluminum replica and an oxide film replica is described. This method, which is applicable to other alloys as well as those of aluminum, may be used to follow changes in surface structure which occur during testing.
